Plainville is located in the southeast quadrant of Payson Township. It is located southeast of Payson Illinois on Illinois Route 96. Payson Township had an population of nearly 1800 as of the 2010 Census. Plainville had a population of 261 after the 2016 Census that was taken.

Plainville has an interesting history. It was originally called Stone’s Prairie after a man named Samuel Stone he originally settled there in 1822. The name of the town was changed to Plainville after 1860 due to a violent political rally involving Republican Party and Democratic Party supporters. We thought we only had these problems in our current political climate. LOL!
