Clayton Illinois located in Clayton Township is located on the western edge of Adams County.
Clayton sits at the intersection of US Highway 24 and County Road 2903 E. Clayton Township is small with only 1027 residents counted at the last Census in 2010. Clayton the village has the largest population in the Township with 709 citizens, according to the last Census in 2010. We’ll call it between 700 and 800 today.
Clayton the village supports an active agricultural economy with thousands of acres of corn and soybeans to be seen in any direction you drive. Illinois is known for that being the largest producer of soybeans in the nation.
Historically Clayton Township got its first settlement in 1829. Obediah Nicks was the first to settle there with his family. Around 1833 more settlers began to arrive quickly.
The village of Clayton was platted in 1834 by Charles McCoy. Mr. McCoy was as an ardent admirer of the statesman Henry Clay so he named the town in his honor.
Clayton was nearly abandoned years later but was revived when the railway through Clayton was built. Clayton was situated on the main line of the Wabash railway that went to Keokuk. I wonder if the Wabash Cannonball ran on this track? Anyone know?
Nearby Clayton to the south is the John Roy Site. It is a pre-Columbian archaeological site that consists of a Woodland period village sit the was dated to have been occupied between 450 and 650 AD by the native Americans that live in this area. You can read more about that here.

And the community is really tight of course like most small towns in Illinois. The sense of community is one of the main good reasons to live in a small town. The people here always come together as a community and comfort one another. It is easy to get involved with volunteer service and many other charitable opportunities.
Folks enjoy spending time all together in Clayton. Among the benefits of small town life is the fact that many people and families do everything together. Quality of life is simpler in a smaller community. Quality time is always among the absolute most attractive reasons to reside in a small town today. For the folks that live here the more relaxed pace of life represents a higher quality of life.
If you are a resident of Clayton, everybody recognizes you too. Everybody knows where you live and who you are, how many sugars you take in your morning coffee. LOL. What days you walk your dog, the number of kids you have, what car you drive and if they should certainly try to keep the paper for you at the local store. Your next-door neighbors go out of their way with kind gestures. Pretty much nothing compares to the close-knit community of the small-town way of living. The people here have traditional values where a lot of people are more thoughtful and respectful. Not everyone is, but most people are. There are always bad apples in every bushel if you know what I mean.
The travel back and forth across town is nothing compared with living in the big city with a lot of stop lights and traffic you must to contend with. Here you’re across town in a couple minutes at the most.
Low crime levels mean we have a safer environment for raising a family.
Folks here find it easy to be informed since everyone knows everyone. If something big happens, you will find out about it soon enough.
The allure of any city, town or village depends on the benefits it provides. Depending on your perspective, small towns offer the very best of both of worlds. Urbanization might be the latest thing propelling much of the rest of the nation, but not everyone wants the bright lights and crowded spaces of a big metropolitan area. Some people appreciate lesser degrees of separation and want more bang for their buck, small-city way of life is difficult to surpass.
