Illinois is located in the middle northeastern part of Mendon Township. Mendon sits just off Illinois Route 110 which runs just east of town.

Mendon has a population of between 900 and 1000 residents. The last Census in 2010 counted 953 citizens. Mendon as a rural farming community and outside of the village are huge acreages of corn and soybean fields.

The first settler to arrive at the site of Mendon was Col. Martin Shuey. He built the first cabin there in 1829. He arrived with his wife and several children. Those early days the area was still inhabited with native Americans and many wild animals that no longer exist in Illinois to this day.

Mendon was platted in 1833 under the name of Fairfield. But that conflicted with the name of another town name Fairfield so it had to be changed. The early settler that arrived in Mendon were from New England.
